Dozens of donkeys raced through the streets of Salcedo in central Ecuador on Saturday as the city staged its "Great Donkey Race" once again.

The donkey race was first run in 2014, but had to be cancelled the next year after the nearby Coropaxi volcano began to rumble. In 2020 and 2021, the event had to be called off as well, because of the global coronavirus pandemic.

This year, 65 donkeys - with colourful names such as Rosita, Cinderella, Pegaso and Licenciado - went for glory. Ahead of the race, the donkeys and their owners paraded through the city and competed for the crown of best dressed participants.
