Samoa prepares for national elections amid political divisions and rising living costs. Earlier this year, the government collapsed following political infighting, and this election has more candidates and parties than in previous cycles.
Key candidates include former agriculture minister Schmidt and former Prime Minister Malielegaoi, both proposing economic measures such as cash payments. Malielegaoi has also suggested building a 20-kilometre bridge between Samoa’s two main islands, while the mayor has proposed removing tariffs on basic food items.
Legal proceedings continue to affect the campaign. Schmidt faces multiple criminal charges, and Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mata'afa has filed criminal and civil cases against him. Many voters are calling for a return to stable governance and economic solutions.
