To prevent any decline in crop production within the Nay Pyi Taw Council Area and to swiftly restore irrigation water to earthquake-affected farmlands, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation has been implementing urgent measures.
As of April 21, water has been successfully released into the main canal of the Hsin Thay Dam irrigation system, enabling the resumption of water supply for summer crops via the Left Main Canal. The Hsin Thay Weir (Dahat Kone Dam), which was damaged in the Mandalay earthquake, had delayed water distribution for already-planted summer paddy and summer crops.
While necessary repairs are ongoing, temporary low-lift pumps have been deployed since the morning of April 21 to divert water into the Left Main Canal, ensuring timely irrigation and preventing crop damage. Union Minister U Min Naung and Deputy Minister U Bo Bo Kyaw conducted an on-site inspection, directing officials to accelerate water distribution to all designated cultivation areas, to reinforce the temporary earthen embankment for stability, and to coordinate closely with relevant departments and farmers to safeguard crops from further damage.
Near Mezali Kyin Village in Tatkone Township, the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation Management is intensively repairing the Hsin Thay Weir (Dahat Kone Dam) which regulates water flow from the Sin Thay Reservoir using heavy machinery.
Water is being stored from the main dam while repairs continue. Once the specified storage level is reached, irrigation will resume normally through the Left and Right Main Canals, ensuring sufficient water for cultivation.
