Commemorative activities: World Breastfeeding Day and Nutrition Promotion Week

A regional level occasion on World Breastfeeding Day and Nutrition Promotion Week activities was held at ChinTwin Hall in Monywa Township of Sagaing Region on August 17th. The theme for this year World Breastfeeding Day is “Enabling Breastfeeding: Making a Difference for Working Parents”.

Region Head Officer, Dr. Win Naing, Public Health Department (Sagaing) said "Commemorative activities for Nutrition Promotion Week are carried out annually on entire month of August with the aim to continuously implementation of Nutrition Promotion Week activities of the country. This year activities are especially target for prevention of diseases including lack of Vitamin A, worm infestations, lack of iron and Vitamin B1.  Besides, it aims to raise the habits of cooking and consuming of nutritious and healthy food. I would like to urge all the people to participate in implementation of nutritious development activities."

The activities include breastfeeding week, nutrition promotion week for children under 5, nutrition promotion week for pregnant and lactating mothers and elimination of Iodine deficiency diseases week. Nutrition Promotion Week activities have being implemented starting from September 2003 all over the world and entire month of August was set as Nutrition Promotion Week starting form 2009.

At the ceremony, the concerned officials and invited guests provided gifts, nutritious foods and also gave Vitamin A and albendazole pills to kindergarten, it’s reported.
