Commemoration Event: Yangon Celebrates 72nd Anniversary Of Union Day

Union Day is a public holiday to commemorate the signing of Panglong Agreement in 1947 - the 12th of February that proved and highlighted the unity of all national races was recognized as “The Union Day”, and it now reached to 72 years.

To commemorate this historic Day, Flag Hoisting and Saluting Ceremony was held at Mahabundula Park in Yangon on Tuesday morning.

Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein read out the message on the occasion of the 72nd   Anniversary of the Union Day which was sent by President U Win Myint.

The Government and ethnic armed organizations have signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement and the Union Peace Conference-21st Century Panglong is also underway to build a better country as a federal democratic Union. 51 basic principles for a democratic federal Union have been signed into the two parts of a Union Accord so far.

Chairman, Zo National Region Development Party, Kham En Thang said “By organizing the Union day which is also a milestone for the independence, it would be a help for the implementation of a federal democratic union. The government has been making efforts for peace by holding the Panglong conference and all the national races are also building a mutual trust between each other to build a federal democratic union.”

MP, Yangon Region Hluttaw (Pabedan Constituency – 1), Than Naing Oo said “Currently, the government is moving for Federal Democratic Union that means all the national races need to be united and follow the rule of laws. Because it's very important for the peace and development of the country. The government is also trying to fulfill the faith, conviction and needs of all national races to make a better country.”

The attendees also hope for ending internal conflicts that has been long for more than 70 years, and hope to achieve eternal peace in the country.

Attendee, May Sandar Aung said “I’m a Shan national. There are internal conflicts especially in border areas in our country.  I wish to get peace and harmony in the future.”

The high ranking officials from Yangon Region government, parliament office, ministers and the public joined the commemoration of the 72nd Anniversary of Union Day.
