Colombia's government announced its intention to resume peace talks with the National Liberation Army (ELN), which had been suspended for more than four years.

Foreign Minister Álvaro Leyva headed his country's delegation in Havana to initiate contacts with ELN representatives.

President Gustavo Petro has pushed for the talks to resume with the rebel group since he was elected into his role.

The latest peace talks with the ELN began in 2017 and took place in Quito and then Havana.

However, the Colombian government suspended the talks in early 2018 following an attack by the guerrilla group on police officers.
