Chile's enormous Southern Patagonian Ice Field has split into two parts in its southern region. Located in the Andes mountain range between Chile and Argentina, the ice field is more than 12,000 square kilometers in size and is the largest ice field in the Southern Hemisphere outside of Antarctica.
It will likely continue fragmenting as a result of the effects of climate change according to Chilean scientists. The discovery of the split occurred in March when investigators set out on an expedition to take stock of glaciers. But their findings were only recently made to the public.
