A coordination meeting on vaccination program of Oral cholera vaccine (OCV) was held at the Yangon Region Government office on Friday and Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein made an opening remark.

The World Health Organization has provided 2 million OCV doses to prevent the severe cholera outbreak, and the OCV vaccine will be administered to all citizens of aged 1 year and above as a priority level in 35 townships across Yangon Region.

This includes the areas with crowded population and poor cleanliness environment, places of migrated people, monasteries and nunneries, religious schools, charity centers and schools, orphanages centers and schools, nursing homes, prisons, mental health hospitals, factories and workshops, high schools and training schools, street markets, and staff housings.

The vaccination of OCV can both prevent and reduce the cholera disease. However, the National Immunization Technical Advisory Group suggests to avoid administering to pregnant women and lactating mothers since there is no specific clinical study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Euvichol-Plus for those group.
