China 'welcomes' efforts towards Ukraine ceasefire after Putin-Trump call

China welcomed all efforts to secure a ceasefire to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Wednesday in comments to a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. 

Mao Ning said at a daily press briefing that China has consistently advocated for resolving the crisis through dialogue and negotiation from the very beginning. She added that they are glad to see all efforts that lead to a ceasefire, viewing this as a necessary step toward achieving peace". 

In their Tuesday phone conversation, Putin and Trump agreed that the peace in Ukraine "will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire."
