On Wednesday, Chile officially launched its latest COVID-19 vaccination campaign aimed at those residents who are 80-years-old and up.
The recipients of the booster jabs at an event in Santiago were receiving the annual bivalent vaccine developed by Pfizer-Bio N Tech to fight both the original strain of the COVID-19 virus as well as a later iteration, the Omicron strain. Medical experts are targeting older persons based on studies indicating that half of all Chileans who died in 2021 were over 80 and the nation's Health Ministry officials felt an additional COVID booster would help protect this particularly vulnerable population.
Other segments of Chile's population will become eligible to receive their booster jabs on a sliding age scale from older to younger.
