Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot issued an emergency declaration Tuesday in response to the surge of migrants since last month. Chicago already has seen the number of new arrivals grow tenfold in recent days. Shelter space is scarce and migrants awaiting a bed are sleeping on floors in police stations and airports.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot, (D) Chicago said "As many of you know, since August of 2022, our city has responded to the arrival of approximately 8,000 asylum seekers. Individuals and families coming to Chicago, most after being inhumanely and dangerously bused here by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

This was done with little advance notice, no coordination, and simply no consideration for our ability to receive these arrivals in a safe, orderly and dignified way” Chicago Mayor is calling on the Illinois governor to mobilize the National Guard to provide staffing and logistical support.
