People across the U.K. and Northern Ireland fell silent for Armistice Day on Friday, commemorating the end of World War I. The event, which happens yearly on the 11th hour of November 11, was commemorated in Wales, Northern Ireland, London and England's National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
In London, the event also saw the recently restored Big Ben chime 11 times. World War I pitted the armies of France, the British Empire, Russia and the U.S. against a German-led coalition that included the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires. Almost 10 million soldiers died, sometimes tens of thousands on a single day.
