Celebration at Yangon Zoo: Yangon Zoological Gardens celebrate its 119 anniversary

Yangon Zoological Gardens celebrate its 119 anniversary on Saturday. Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi attended the opening ceremony, and took part in the ceremonial ribbon cutting event.

The celebration features various exhibitions, and will continue till the 26th. Established in 1906, the Yangon Zoological Gardens is the oldest among the zoos in Southeast Asia. It bacame a member of Southeast Asian Zoos and Aquariams Association in 2013, and is carrying out the animal health care, research works and educative activities in cooperation with the member countries.

Aiming to provide recreation area for local and foreign visitors, to educate on the natural environment, eco-system and wildlife conservation, to conduct zoological and botanical studies and research works and to ensure the reproduction of endangered species, the Yangoo Zoo houses some 1,400 animals of more than 130 species. In addition, the Natural History Museum and Elephant Museum are also opened to the public.
