The Central Committee for Counter-Terrorism issued a Notification No. 1/2025 on Thursday, on declaration of a Terrorist Organization.
The Central Committee, by exercising its authority under Section 6 (g) and Section 72 (b) of the Counter-Terrorism Law, and with the approval of the Union Government, issued the notification. It stated that the Kayin National Union (KNU) armed group has committed acts that fall under terrorism as defined by the Counter-Terrorism Law.
These acts include intentionally targeting public safety and the lives and property of civilians, attacking essential public infrastructure, government buildings, vehicles, machinery, and public utilities. Specific acts include planting landmines and destroying public roads and bridges, shelling and launching heavy weapons into civilian-populated towns and villages, dropping bombs from a distance, killing innocent civilians, forcibly recruiting people and destroying state-owned buildings, vehicles, machinery, and public property.
These acts have been carried out within the territory of the country and constitute acts of terrorism. Therefore, due to the aforementioned ongoing terrorist activities, the Kayin National Union (KNU) is declared a terrorist organization. The notification was signed by the Chairman of the Central Committee for Counter-Terrorism.
