Canada's ruling Liberal Party will choose a successor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has led the government since 2015. Pre-registered party members are casting their ballots online.

Counting will start immediately after the voting deadline late Sunday afternoon. Four leadership contenders include former Governor of the Bank of Canada, Mark Carney, as well as former deputy prime minister and former finance minister Chrystia Freeland.

The candidates are calling for countermeasures, including retaliatory tariffs, and finding new markets to reduce Canada's dependence on the US. Trudeau announced in January that he will step down both as prime minister and party leader. The new Liberal Party leader will become prime minister once Trudeau officially resigns.
