The Canadian city of Edmonton made final preparations for the arrival of Pope Francis who begins a weeklong visit Sunday to apologize to Indigenous peoples in residential schools. The Pope's self-defined "penitential journey" will allow him to beg forgiveness from survivors of the country's residential schools.

Father Cristino Bouvette, an Indigenous Priest of Cree Origin involved in the organization of the Papal visit, said that the Pope had designated it a pilgrimage and had placed it above other priorities in order to muster the strength needed to complete it. On Monday the Pope is scheduled to visit a former residential school in Maskwacis near Edmonton where he will visit a cemetery and meet with survivors.
