Buddha Day: Water pouring ceremony at Shwedagon Pagoda

Yangon Region Government held a water pouring ceremony on Wednesday, the Full Moon Day of Kason, the Buddha Day atthe Shwedagon Pagoda in line with the COVID-19 prevention guidelines.

Chief Minister U Soe Thein and many other officials as well as Buddhist devotee participated in this ceremony. The Buddha Dayis a holiday traditionally observed by Buddhists in South Asia and Southeast Asia as well as Tibet and Mongolia. It is the most important Buddhist festival. 

This sacred day coincides with the days the Buddha-to-be was prophesied, the Buddha-to-be was given birth, the Buddha-to-be attained Enlightenment and the demise of Lord Buddha Gautama. It is celebrated by watering the Bodhi tree and chanting. Every year, Buddhists consider the full moon day of Kason as a special day, offer water to Bodhi (banyan) trees, keep Sabbath, practise meditation, and do good deeds such as food donation and charity.
