Brazil celebrates 90th anniversary of iconic Christ statute

Brazil on Tuesday celebrated the 90th anniversary of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking the city, with an event at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro. With an army band, a choir, local and religious authorities, the ceremony had the exhibition of special coins done by Brazil's mint and commemorative postage stamps.

Later, a Mass was celebrated inside the statue. On the Catholic holiday for "Our Lady of Aparecida," the patroness of Brazil, the Christ the Redeemer statue was inaugurated on October 12, 1931, after 5 years of construction. The 38-meter tall statue attracts almost 2 million tourists every year.
