President Joe Biden told reporters Friday evening that he spoke with the mother of Tyre Nichols and told her he would be making the case to Congress to pass the George Floyd Act, aimed at preventing police misconduct. In his short remarks to reporters, Biden underscored the call for peaceful protests and said "innocent people's lives" are at stake.

President Joe Biden said "I can only do so much with an executive order at the federal level, "What's at stake is, first of all, innocent people's lives, Number two, it has a lot to say and do with the image of America. It has a lot to do with whether or not we are the country we say we are, that we're a country of law and order and a means by which the, to peacefully protest and let the courts make the judgment."

Tyre Nichols died three days after a Jan. 7 confrontation with five Memphis police officers during a traffic stop.
