Belt And Road Initiative: Steering Committee For Implementation Holds Meeting

Chairperson of the Steering Committee for Implementation of Belt and Road Initiative State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi addressed the 1st committee meeting on Monday.

The meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw was also attended by the Committee Vice Chairman Vice President U Myint Swe, Union Ministers, Union Attorney General and many other high-ranking officials. The State Counsellor stressed cooperation could bring profitable opportunities not only to Myanmar but also to the region; importance of strategies to make projects bring short-term and long-term mutual benefits; and adherene to the Myanmar’s national projects, polices and regulations.

The Vice President stressed implementation of only the projects which would develop the country and the socioeconomic status of the people and cooperation and negotiation among the committees, ministries and states and regional governments. The Committee Members Union Ministers reported on progress in establishing Myanmar-China Boder Economic Cooperation Zone, implementation of Myanmar-China Economic Corridor and many other matters.

The meeting also discussed preparations, process and suggestions on the Belt and Road Initiative implementation. Proposed by China in 2013, the Belt and Road initiative refers to the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which is aimed at building a trade and infrastructure network connecting Asian with Europe and Africa along the ancient trade routes of Silk Road.
