Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo arrived at the royal palace in Brussels to hand in his resignation to King Philippe after his governing coalition lost its majority in the European elections.

De Croo announced his resignation following the defeat of his Flemish Liberals and Democrats party (Open VLD).

He will now submit his resignation to King Philippe, who has the discretion to accept or reject it. Open VLD saw its biggest decline in De Croo's constituency of East Flanders, where its vote share dropped from 17.85% in 2019 to 10% this year, falling to less than 7% overall.
