Beijing begins 100-day countdown to Winter Olympics

A 100-day countdown to the start of the Beijing Winter Olympics began on Tuesday. Visitors to Beijing's central shopping street gathered in front of the clock and cheered when it hit 100 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds.  The celebratory moment came as China attempts to curb recent coronavirus outbreaks.

Olympic athletes and support staff arriving for the games are required to either be vaccinated or to undergo a three-week quarantine under strict controls. Only spectators from within China are allowed to buy tickets to attend the games.  Beijing will become the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
