Battle of Oranges kicks off in Ivrea, Italy

The annual Battle of the Oranges kicked off in the Italian town of Ivrea on Sunday. During the three-day carnival, participants are divided into two groups commoners and guards of the medieval lords. Commoners are on foot and the guards are transported around by carriage. The two groups attack each other with oranges, holding nothing back. According to data collected in previous years, the Battle of the Oranges requires as much as 500 tons of oranges.
