Bangkok is set to enact a new ordinance regulating pet ownership to address disturbances from pets and strays. Key provisions include mandatory microchipping for dogs and cats, limits on the number of pets with one for homes under 80 square meters and up to six for larger properties and sterilization programs for strays. The ordinance will also impose special controls on dangerous breeds, such as Pit Bulls and Rottweilers, requiring them to wear muzzles and be leashed.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will create a central database for registered pets, requiring owners to obtain veterinary certification and microchipping. Non-compliance will result in penalties under the Public Health Act of 1992. Additional initiatives include mobile units for sterilizing strays and a shelter for aggressive dogs in Prawet district.
