Bagan Cultural Heritage: Progress of 1st phase of conservation project

A handover ceremony of the 11 ancient pagodas (22 projects) under the 1st phase of Earthquake damaged ancient pagodas in Bagan Cultural Heritage Site conservation project initiated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) was held on Friday.

The ceremony was attended by Union Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture U Tin Oo Lwin, Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Sh. Abhay Thakur and Consul General Mr. Sundeep Kaushal and many other concerned officials.

With the assistance of Indian Government, a MoU between India and Myanmar for the conservation of 72 earthquake-damaged pagodas in Bagan Cultural Heritage Site was signed on 11th May 2018 in Nay Pyi Taw. Under the MoU, 10-year conservation project is being carried out dividing into 3 phases. Phase 1 of the project started in 2020 and a total of 11 ancient pagodas has already renovated.

During the ceremony, the Union Minister, the Indian Ambassador and Consul General made speeches respectively. They also made a tour to renovated 11 ancient pagodas and oversaw the murals and ancient cultural artworks.
