Awareness seminar: Measures to reduce traffic and road accidents

Jointly organized by Yangon Region Public Transport Committee-YRTC and the Yangon University of Economics (Ywa Tha Gyi), awareness seminar on traffic and road safety was held at the University.

 In accord with objective of National Road Safety Council (NRSC), it is targeted to reduce the death rates of the traffic and road accidents that happened in 2020 at 50 percent by 2030 and to achieve the goal, 5 Quick Win plans are being implemented.

Lyan Cin Mang, Joint Secretary, YRTC, said " With the instruction of YRTC, we conduct awareness seminar on traffic and road safety. We have already conducted awareness seminars at about 20 schools and universities this year. About 1.35 million people die in road accidents a year globally and one person dies in 23 seconds. About 3 percent of the nation’s GDP is cost for road and traffic accidents."

Faculty members and students of Yangon University of Economics (YwaThaGyi) joined the awareness seminar. 

Shine Wai Hyan Lumin, 1st year student, YUE (Ywa Tha Gyi), said " We have learned about the traffic rules and regulations that we haven’t known before. We should wear good quality helmets in riding motor bikes to protect our heads and save our lives if an accident happens."

According to the 2022 NRSC report, 94 per cent of road accidents are due to human errors, the condition of the environment, location of roads, designs and road standards, it is learnt.
