Australians gathered at a memorial on Sydney’s Bondi Beach as a ceremony began to honor victims of the mass shooting at a Jewish festival one week earlier.

The attack on December 14 left 15 people dead and 42 others wounded. Flowers and messages were placed at the site ahead of a national day of reflection held under the theme “light over darkness.” A minute of silence was observed nationwide exactly one week after the first reports of gunfire at 6:47 p.m. local time.
