Police in Australia's most populous state of New South Wales announced Monday that they had arrested and charged 554 domestic violence suspects in a four-day operation.

The arrests come as Australia grapples with the violent deaths of 28 women this year, averaging one death every four days, compared to only 14 deaths during the same period last year.

Peter Thurtell, NSW Police Deputy Commissioner said "Whilst Amarok is one of the tools that we use to target outstanding offenders, every day of the week our police officers are executing search warrants, arrest warrants and arresting offenders in the home for domestic violence. Something has to give. These offenders have got to get the message that abuse of females is not acceptable. Domestic violence is not acceptable and we will not stop in our operation."

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has labeled it a "national crisis," unveiling measures to combat deepfake pornography and increase funding for women seeking refuge from abusive relationships.
