An Islamic State group attack on a prison holding hundreds of its members in eastern Afghanistan continued on Monday, with at least 21 people dead and 43 injured.  The prison assault took place in Jalalabad, Nangarhar's provincial capital some 115 kilometers east of the capital, Kabul, when an explosive-laden vehicle was driven into the prison entrance by a suicide bomber.

The battle continued on Monday with sporadic gunfire in the prison grounds.  The prison houses about 1,500 inmates, of which several hundred are believed to belong to the Islamic State group affiliate in Afghanistan. The attack comes a day after the Afghan intelligence agency said a senior Islamic State group commander was killed by Afghan special forces near Jalalabad.
