Asean University Games: Vice President Addresses Opening Ceremony

The 2018 ASEAN University Games, officially known as the 19th ASEAN University Games was officially opened on Monday evening in Nay Pyi Taw.

This is the first time Myanmar is hosting the ASEAN University Games. Vice President U Myint Swe attended the opening ceremony at Wunna Theikdi Stadium and gave a speech. In his address, the Vice President stressed that nowadays, sport is an effective diplomatic way promoting friendship among the nations.

More than 2,000 athletes from 11 countries are participating in this 19th edition. The objective of the ASEAN University Games is to strengthen friendship among ASEAN nations through sports, and exchange experiences and culture among students studying in ASEAN universities.

The ASEAN University Games has been held every two years since 1981. Myanmar participated in the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th games. This 19th ASEAN University Games which will continue till the 19th of December includes 17 sports including archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, football, golf, karate, sepak takraw, swimming and volleyball.
