The unique embroidery and design of the textile products have become part of Mexico's visual identity and have become increasingly popular abroad. In recent years, several prominent international fashion brands have started using the designs without any benefit to Indigenous communities.
Human rights group campaigner said he would "call out" those companies for copying the designs. He said the copies affected "more than the sale of the products but relations within the communities and artisan families."
