New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern arrived in Antarctica on Wednesday to see the scientific research taking place and to mark the 65th anniversary of New Zealand's Scott Base.
Ardern's trip marks a rare visit by a world leader to Antarctica. She had planned to arrive on Tuesday but her plane was turned back mid-flight due to bad weather.
Ardern said New Zealand's presence in Antarctica was at a "critical juncture." Her government has committed to redeveloping the country's Scott Base in Antarctica. Meanwhile, delegations from Russia and Ukraine are among those meeting in Australia this week to decide the future of Antarctica's pristine waters.
