UN chief Antonio Guterres urged a "humanitarian ceasefire" in the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas and called for global "action to end this godawful nightmare" as he addressed Arab and international leaders attending the International Peace Summit in Cairo on Saturday.
Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General said "The time has come for action, action to end this godawful nightmare, and action to build a future worthy of the dreams of the children of Palestine, Israel, the region and our world."
The war has left thousands dead and displaced a million Palestinians, who Guterres said need "much more" than the 20 trucks that were entering the besieged territory of 2.4 million people. Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas warned against displacing Palestinians from Gaza, West Bank and Jerusalem. Jordan's King Abdullah II also called for "an immediate end to the war on Gaza."
