US space agency NASA says James Lovell, the commander of the abortive Apollo 13 moon mission in 1970, has died at the age of 97. In 1968, the Ohio-born Lovell took part in man's maiden voyage to the moon aboard Apollo 8. Apollo 8 was the first crewed spacecraft to achieve lunar orbit. NASA said Lovell died in Illinois on Thursday.
