Amazon rainforest activist, 81, shot dead in Peru

An 81-year-old Amazon rainforest defender in Peru was reportedly shot dead in her ancestral town, local media reported. According to a local indigenous group, she was shot a number of times by an assailant who fled on a motorbike. She was well-known for her use of medicinal plants from the Amazon. Authorities have vowed to investigate and appealed for calm amidst unconfirmed reports that a vigilante group had lynched a suspect.
