Algerian President Tebboune rejected the idea of a visit to France, which he said would be humiliating in the context of renewed strained relations between the two countries.

He said "I am not going to Canossa". Popularised by German Chancellor Bismarck at the end of the 19th century, the expression "going to Canossa" refers to an act of penance or submission.
