




The death toll from last week’s torrential rains in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand has climbed past 1,400.On the western Indonesian island of Sumatra, rain-triggered flooding and landslides have so far left 770 people dead and 463 missing.
Multiple local environmental groups point out that large-scale forest clearing for natural resource mining and other purposes contributed to the disaster.The downpours have killed 479 people in Sri Lanka and at least 170 in Thailand.About 800 people remain unaccounted for in Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Authorities are continuing search and rescue efforts.
