





Rescue and recovery efforts were under way on Tuesday, after a powerful earthquake hit eastern Afghanistan, leaving more than 1,400 people dead.
The earthquake struck a mountainous area in Nangarhar province, with the epicentre 27 kilometres from the city of Jalalabad. With much of the region affected lying in remote, inhospitable terrain, the death toll may rise significantly as emergency teams gain access.
