Afghan women org. calls for girls schools to reopen

The Afghan Women's Organization for Peace and Freedom called on the country's Taliban rulers on Sunday to reopen schools for girls. This week, the Taliban unexpectedly decided against reopening schools to girls above the sixth grade.

The surprising decision, confirmed by a Taliban official, is bound to disrupt efforts by the Taliban to win recognition from potential international donors at a time when the country is dealing with a worsening humanitarian crisis.

The Taliban's refusal to open up education to all Afghan children has also infuriated large swaths of the Afghan population.
