Academic Sector: Meeting on literacy campaign for rural & ethnic people

A work coordination meeting to implement literacy campaigns for rural and ethnic people was held at the Ministry of Education in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday.

At the meeting, Secretary of the Education, Health and Human Resource Development Committee Union Minister for Education Dr Nyunt Pe made an opening speech saying that, the SAC chairman guided to promote the education sector for the people in rural and ethnic areas and the Ministry of Education has carried out the basic literacy campaigns in Taunggyi, Kalaw and Hopong townships in Southern Shan State and will continue the education activities in December 2023.

The Ministry will cooperate with Shan State Government to carry out the teaching plans for those aged 15 and above who have completed the basic education and primary education level. The literacy campaigns will be carried out for ethnic and rural people in all regions and states.

The literacy activities will be included to teach the Myanmar language and the basic Maths for the people who can’t read and write, especially those aged 15 and above, adults and elders. The volunteer trainers will share their knowledge of social life improvement.

The Union Minister added that the Ministry has been cooperating with the regional government to implement the 40-day literacy campaign in Shan, Kachin and other regions and states in December 2023. He urged participants to discuss the extension of literacy programs for the rural and ethnic people in coming summer accordance with the guidance of Prime Minister.

Then, Director General of Department of Alternative Education and Life Long Learning reported measures for the alternative education activities and future plans. Then, the participants discussed the future plans and literacy programs on which the Union Minister gave necessary instructions.
