Survivors of Auschwitz-Birkenau gathered on Thursday to commemorate the 78th anniversary of its liberation. The former concentration camp, located in the town of Oświęcim in southern Poland, was liberated in the last moments of World War II.

During Nazi occupation it was the site of the systematic murder of Jews, Poles, Roma and others targeted for death by Adolf Hitler and his regime. In all, some 1.1 million people were killed there, most of them Jewish, before the site was liberated by Soviet troops on Jan. 27, 1945.
