53 years old aircraft wreck in the Sapanca Lake

The wreckage of the plane that crashed into Sakarya Sapanca Lake in 1972 was captured underwater by journalist Hasan Coşkun 53 years later. Diving to a depth of 8 meters, 200 meters off the shore, Coşkun recorded the wreckage of the RF-84F “Thunderflash” type photo reconnaissance plane of the Turkish Armed Forces that crashed into the lake on August 1, 1972.

According to Anadolu Agency’s news report dated August 3, 1972, Pilot Major Akil Erdem was martyred in the plane that crashed. The downed plane was also the subject of newspapers at the time.
