Cuba began to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Ian, which lashed the island in Category 3 storm early on Tuesday. It especially affected the western region of Pinar del Rio, where the government estimates 50,000 people were being evacuated.

The Meteorological Institute reported that the city of Pinar del Río was in the eye of the hurricane for an hour and a half, destroying houses and leaving debris and flooding blocking roads. No deaths were reported so far nor was there any information on material damages. The hurricane was on its way to Florida through Caribbean waters where it is expected to strengthen to a Category 4 storm.
