





Magway Region Government on Wednesday commemorated the 37th International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day).
In this event at the townhall in Magway, Chief Minister U Tint Lwin said that he drug problem is not a problem that only one country has to deal with but a problem that all countries have to deal with as a whole. He also highlighted awareness programmes among the public and students.
Magway Region Government destroyed 36.5 acres of opium poppy cultivation in Ngape Township in 2023-2024. Cultivation of opium substitute crops is being carried out in the Region. The most terrible danger for all mankind today is drugs.
All mankind must work together to eliminate the danger of drugs, the Chief Minister added. And, a message sent by Member of the State Administration Council, Chairman of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control, and Union Minister for Home Affairs was read out.
Then, awards were presented to the winning students in the Central- and Regional-level painting, cartoon, poster and digital art competitions in commemoration of the 37th International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
Supported each year by individuals, communities, and various organizations all over the world, this global observance aims to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society.
