The 34th Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Africa (ARC34) was held from 13th to 17th April in Nouakchott hosted by the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. This year, ARC34 brought together government ministers from across Africa to discuss pertinent issues related to agrifood systems transformation. During the event, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu urged Ministers to leverage the continent’s youthful demographics to bolster food production and distribution. He added that the technology can offer an opportunity to bypass the limitations of the past.
QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General said “I see a future where the technology from the drought-resistant seeds to digital extension service that can bypass the limitation of the past. We must unlock Africa’s vast agricultural potential, not through exploitation, but through innovation.”
While Africa often bears the consequence of climate and conflict shocks created elsewhere, strengthening the continent’s own production capacity is now a strategic necessity as well as a development priority.
