On the eve of Coming of Age Day, a group of 20-year-olds in Osaka took part in a symbolic climb up one of Japan’s tallest buildings, the 300-meter-tall Abeno Harukas skyscraper.

The event, under the slogan “Let’s Step into Adulthood,” saw around 50 participants in traditional kimono and suits ascend 1,637 steps to the observation deck on the 60th floor.

Although the legal age of adulthood was lowered from 20 to 18 in 2022, many still celebrate turning 20 as a key milestone.

Participants wrote pledges on white sashes, vowing to grow in body and soul and remain grateful. After completing the climb in about an hour, the climbers took photos at the rooftop heliport, marking their transition into adulthood.
