180th Anniversary of the Destruction of Opium at Humen in China

A celebration to commemorate the 180th Anniversary of the Destruction of Opium at Humen was held at Qinhuangdao in Hebei  Province of China on 10th June. It was a historic anti-drug event, led by Commissioner Lin Zexu  during Qing  Dynasty. The destruction of opium was conducted from 3rd to 25th June in 1839 at Humen  Township, and more than 1,000 tons of opium seized from the British traders were destroyed.

Lin served as a Commissioner who governed Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces during Qing Dynasty. He remained committed to fighting opium throughout his tenure. A commemorative messages were read out during the ceremony which was attended by the international experts, local authorities, and invited guests from around the world.
