146th Anniversary: Myanma Railways holds celebration on May 1

The 146th anniversary celebration of the Myanma Railways under the Ministry of Transport and Communications took place at the Nay Pyi Taw Railways Station on Monday and was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Transport and Communications Admiral Tin Aung San.

At the ceremony, the Union Minister briefed the history of railway service in Myanmar starting from the 161-mile Yangon-Pyay railway service on the 1st of May 1877. During the 146-year journey of the Myanma Railways, the transportation needs of the country is being met due to the perseverance and dedication of the Myanma Railways staff with diligent work.

During the long history, the department of Myanma Railways has faced many difficulties, success, loses and gained a lot of experiences. He added that the railways sector is the one of the most important sector for the country and can reduce the air pollution and environmental damage compared to the use of vehicles.

Trains can transport a large number of passengers and is a must-used transportation system to reduce the traffic jam. He added that the aim is to ensure the safe and smooth transportation of passengers and goods with fair prices in line with motto of the Ministry of Transport and Communications “Transport and Communications for the benefits of the people”.

And, Managing Director of the Myanmar Railways explained activities of the department and screened a documentary video commemorating the 146th anniversary of the Myanma Railways. This celebration continued with presenting awards to officers and staff members for their outstanding performances.
