1 killed after U.S. military aircraft crashes off west Japan

A Japan Coast Guard patrol boat carried out a search and rescue mission off the Coast of Yakushima Island after a US Osprey military aircraft with six crew on board crashed on Wednesday, with at least one confirmed dead.

Officials said police received information that the Osprey landed on the coast near Yakushima Airport at around 2:37 p.m. local time, with its left engine emitting fire. The Osprey was on its way from the Iwakuni US base near Hiroshima in the Yamaguchi region headed for the Kadena base further south in Okinawa.
