Venezuelan police fire tear gas on anti-Maduro protestors

11 April 2017

Venezuela's National Guard on Monday fired tear gas at student protesters in Caracas angry at the erosion of democracy under leftist President Nicolas Maduro. Although the Venezuelan court quickly overturned the most controversial part of its decision the move triggered condemnation at home and abroad. Tensions in Venezuela after a Supreme Court decision to assume the functions of the opposition-led congress sparked outcry among a population already suffering from triple-digit inflation and widespread shortages of basic goods.
